PMEA Events

Cost to attend is $5 per individual. Parents are responsible for transporting their student home from the concert/festival/fest after the concert. Be sure to arrive early, and sit in the back for the best experience.

Honors Band

The District 5 PMEA Honors Band Festival is an audition-only ensemble open to all 9th-12th graders located in Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver and Butler counties. Students practice their music months in advance of the auditions in November. Selctions are made after this audition and those that qualify rehearse and perform together in the Honors Band Festival. This festival typically takes place in the first 2 weeks of December on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rehearsals are from 9am-3:30pm on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is a rehearsal from 9am-11:30am, a banquet for students only at 12pm and the concert at 2. Students must be taken home by a designated adult from the concert. Attire for rehearsals is anything acceptable in school. Attire for the performance is the marching band uniform minus gauntlets, gloves, shako and plume.

District Band

The District 5 PMEA District Band Festival is a paper application and advancement ensemble open to all 10th-12th graders located in Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver and Butler counties. This festival typically takes place between the middle of January and the end of February on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Students who applied by paper, as well as the top 20-30% of students from the District 5 Honors Band Festival, were selected at the District 5 Honors Band Festival on the Saturday of the festival. Rehearsals are from 9am-3:30pm on Thursday and Friday. When students arrive for the festival on Thursday, they will play excerpts from their District 5 District Band Festival concert music in order to determine their skill and placement for advancement. Saturday is a rehearsal from 9am-11:30am, a banquet for students only at 12pm and the concert at 2. Students must be taken home by a designated adult from the concert. Attire for rehearsals is anything acceptable in school. Attire for the performance is the marching band uniform minus gauntlets, gloves, shako and plume.

Region Band

The Region 1 Band Festival is an advancement-only ensemble open to 10th-12th graders located in Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver, Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, Greene, Fayette and Butler counties. Only students that are automatically advanced from the District 5 and District 1 District Band Festivals can be advanced to the Region 1 Band Festival. For a student to be automatically advanced from the District 5 District Band Festival, students must be seated in the top 20-30% of their section (depending on the number of students that attend the Festival). Selection of the students advancing to Region band were made the first day of the District 5 District Band via in-person auditions using the concert music. This festival typically takes place between the end of February and the end of March on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rehearsals are from 9am-8:30pm on Thursday and Friday. Hotel accomodations will be provided for students depending on the location of the hosting site. When students arrive on Thursday, they will play excerpts from their Region 1 Band Festival concert music in order to determine chairs and who is moving on to the PMEA All-State Convention. Only the top 10-15% of students will move on from Region 1 Band Festival. Saturday is a rehearsal from 9am-11:30am, a banquet for students only at 12pm, and the concert at 2pm. Students must be taken home by a designated adult from the concert. Attire for rehearsals is anything acceptable in school. Attire for the performance is the marching band uniform minus gauntlets, gloves, shako and plume.

County Band

A festival that takes place every year at a local college. This festival is by paper audition only and is for students in grades 7-12. Names are submitted in November and names are selected in December. This festival is two days in January. There are two bands, a 7th and 8th grade band (jr high) and a 9th-12th grade band (sr high). Music will be distributed to students when the roster names are selected. Day1 - Students will need a packed lunch, their music and their instrument. Students will travel to the local college via bus on the first day for rehearsal and rehearsal will take place during the school day until approximately 3:30pm. When rehearsal concludes the first day, students will return via bus to the high school by 5pm to be picked up by parents. Day 2 - The following day is a rehearsal, banquet and the concert. Students will leave the school via bus at approximately 1pm for the college. Parents are responsible for picking up their students after the concert. Students will need to bring their music, instrument and their attire for the concert. Attire for the concert is: High School – Marching Band Uniforms (No Shako, plume, gauntlets or gloves) Junior High – White shirt, black pants. Ladies may elect to wear a black dress with or without a shawl that is either black or white. Students will begin rehearsing around 2pm. At the conclusion of rehearsal, students will be served dinner. After this, students will change in to their concert attire. The concert will start at 7pm for the junior high. Once the junior high portion of the concert has concluded, the senior high will take the stage. Junior high students can be dismissed at this time (although, feel free to stay for the rest of the concert!) The senior high portion of the concert should begin around 7:30pm. Parents are responsible for picking their student(s) up from the concert site and bringing them home.

Jr High District Band
